Deebot 500 Review – A Gift For New Parents

The Deebot 500 is a perfect gift for new parents! Deebot 500 Robot Vacuum Review.

Deebot 500 Review – Is a robot vacuum the perfect gift for new parents?

I have been wanting a robot vacuum for a couple of years now. I hate vacuuming (Okay, let’s be honest, I hate cleaning anything!) and I thought it would just make things so much easier.

I was so surprised when my parents gave us one for Christmas this year! What an awesome gift!

My hope is that having a robot vacuum will help to keep our floors clean and healthy for the boys to play on, and that it will help me balance my time. Anything that helps me maximize my time as a stay-at-home mom is definitely a positive thing in my book!)

(Thanks, Mom and Dad!)

Deebot 500 Robot Vacuum

They bought us the ECOVACS Deebot 500 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner. First, let’s take a quick peek at the specs.

Size

This robot is 13”-13”, and 3 inches tall and weighs about 4.5 lbs. It’s definitely smaller than I expected. It has a dustbin that holds 520 ML. I’ll discuss that more later.

Run Time

Run time is about an hour and 10 minutes, which I feel is pretty substantial.

Suction Power

There is an option to run the vac on 2x suction power for hard-to-clean spots.

Recharging

The robot comes with a dock, which is auto-charging.

Other options

Like most smart appliances now-a-days, this robot connects to your phone via wifi. Use the App “ECOVACS HOME” to set it up.

It is also compatible with Google and Alexa.

Deebot 500 Set Up

Set Up was super duper easy! Remove from the box, take off all the adhesive liners for packaging, plug in the dock, and let it charge!

Connecting to wifi was a little more complex, but basically you hit the power button in sequence a couple times while your phone is connected to its wifi and you’re good to go. Your app will walk you through it.

Deebot 500 First Clean

My toddler actually started the robot for its first cleaning! He was so freaked out, we spent the rest of the afternoon on the couch with the living room gate closed.

There are 3 different modes you can set the robot to clean:

  • Auto (cleans in a U shape—this is the longest mode)
  • Edge (runs along the walls for a quick clean)
  • Spot (runs in a circle to clean one dirty spot)

It was on Auto mode, so it ran in a seemingly randomized pattern to clean our family room, hallway, and kitchen.

It took a long time.

We have 2 medium-sized dogs, and I had to stop the Deebot several times to empty the small 520 ML canister. Now, to be fair, it had been 2 weeks since I swept the dog hair.

Pretty pit bull on rug.

Thankfully though, both dogs ignored the robot and just moved out of the way when it came near! I was worried that our more spastic dog would not like it! It was fine!

If you run the robot vac every few days (for pet owners) you will have to empty the container after each cycle. But thankfully, since that first vacuum, I haven’t had to stop the vacuum to empty it again!

We also have several rugs. I was really impressed just how easily the robot went from tile floor to the rug.

It did get stuck once on our Christmas tree skirt, but it was my fault for not picking it up off the floor first.

It maneuvered around the piano legs, coffee table, and dining chairs quite easily!

When it was done, the carpet looked nice and I hardly had to lift a finger! I was impressed how it got the dog fur.

Considerations as a Parent

Baby on rug cleaned by Deebot 500 robot vacuum.

We have to run the robot vac when my sons are asleep or not in the house (such as a visit to nanny and pappa’s house).

My toddler is deathly afraid of it and keeps insisting that it will “get you!”

Also, if you’re someone with toys on the floor constantly, you WILL need to pick them up before you run the vacuum.

It is a huge time saver, and we know, as parents, the time is valuable!

Make sure you consider whether the new parents have animals. If the animals will freak out or make noise if the vac is running and the baby is sleeping… that does not equal happy parents. Be sure to send a gift receipt!

Is a Robot Vacuum a Good Gift for New Parents?

It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles. But the Deebot 500 is definitely a solid machine that is highly useful and would be a great choice as a gift for new parents!

I can only imagine how amazing this would be when I first became a mother!

If you think the Deebot 500 is a bit too basic, there are more vacuums from Ecovacs and other companies like iRobot and GOOVI that have an excellent selection of features! Just take a look!

  1. I have a Chinese robot vacuum cleaner, a cheaper version, and I love it. It vacuums, mops the floor and saves me tons of time. No app but that doesn’t bother me. So, yes, a robot vacuum cleaner is definitely a great gift for new parents. Saves time!

  2. I have actually been debating this for a while now! My baby is now starting to constantly put dog hair hair from the floor in her mouth and I just don’t have the time to vacuum every day! I will definitely be looking at this as an option!

    1. I would highly suggest getting it while she is still little! She can get acclimated to the robot and know that it’s not a threat! It was definitely a mistake to not get this earlier since my toddler is convinced it’s evil.
