40 Just for Today Affirmations for When Everything Is Too Much

I recently took a Reiki Level 1 course, and one of my favorite parts was the 5 Reiki Principles. I’ll explain more about this in the post below, but essentially, these principles remove the pressure and weight of so much of our lives in three little words:

“Just for today.”

So when you feel overwhelmed with the distance you have yet to go toward your goals or personal development, or when you get impatient, frustrated, or exhausted by the weight of everything in your life, use these Just for Today Affirmations to help you take that next step forward!

Do The Next Right Thing

In Frozen 2, Anna learns to keep going amidst grief and loss. General Mattias taught her the words “Do the Next Right Thing,” prompting her to sing just this when Elsa and Olaf die.

Sometimes it doesn’t have to be death. Sometimes it’s just change. Sometimes it’s illness, or feeling stuck, or feeling like a burden, or feeling like no matter what you do, life is just going to knock you back down again.

So what’s the point?

Your joy is the point. The purpose you’re meant to fulfill on earth is the point.

We must go on! There is so much out there waiting for us, even if we’re going through a rough patch. You must find the courage to go on and take that next step, whatever it may be.

The 5 Reiki Principles

The 5 Reiki Principles are basic yet powerful.

  1. Just for today, I will not anger.
  2. Just for today, I will not worry.
  3. Just for today, I will be grateful.
  4. Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
  5. Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

There is no pressure to make this a part of your identity. But if you’re someone who has decided to make a change for the better, you know you must take that step. That’s why you’re only affirming to do this “just for today.”

In the context of feeling overwhelmed or beat down by life, this can look like getting out of bed, just for today. Or sharing a smile with someone, just for today.

The “next right thing” might not always look the same, but it helps to take one step, then another, then another.

40 Just for Today Affirmations

Using the words “Just for today” might also help neurodivergent individuals who experience affirmations as inauthentic. When you’re not forcing yourself to be this way for any day except today, it feels a little less phony and more doable.

These affirmations, unlike the Reiki principles, are in present tense rather than future tense. This puts them in the now, at a very manageable level.

  1. Just for today, I choose peace and respond with calm.
  2. Just for today, I see challenges as opportunities to grow.
  3. Just for today, I honor my feelings and treat myself with compassion.
  4. Just for today, I live with gratitude for the blessings in my life.
  5. Just for today, I trust the process and allow life to unfold with ease.
  6. Just for today, I am patient with myself and my journey.
  7. Just for today, I welcome joy in small and simple moments.
  8. Just for today, I speak kindly to myself and others.
  9. Just for today, I focus on what I can do right now, and that is enough.
  10. Just for today, I release what I cannot control and rest in the present.
  11. Just for today, I find beauty in this moment.
  12. Just for today, I open my heart to love, kindness, and connection.
  13. Just for today, I am grounded, safe, and supported.
  14. Just for today, I allow myself to rest and replenish my energy.
  15. Just for today, I believe in myself and the path I am walking.
  16. Just for today, I embrace the present moment fully.
  17. Just for today, I release worry and trust in life’s flow.
  18. Just for today, I breathe deeply and let calm fill my body.
