Who was Rumi?

Jalāl al-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (1207–1273), often simply called Rumi, was a 13th-century Persian poet, Islamic scholar, and Sufi mystic. He is best known for his deeply spiritual poetry that explores themes of love, unity, and the divine.
His most famous work, the Masnavi, is considered one of the greatest spiritual masterpieces ever written. Rumi’s teachings are most frequently printed in Persian, their original language, but they transcend religion and culture, emphasizing the transformative power of love and the journey of the soul.
While I feel that Rumi is still rather unknown, his poetry is quoted frequently throughout our culture and society.

The Immortal Wisdom of Rumi’s Poetry
Here are a few of his most often-quoted lines of poetry:
- “The wound is the place where the Light enters you.”
- “What you seek is seeking you.”
- “You were born with wings, why prefer to crawl through life?”
- “Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray.”
- “Don’t grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form.”
Surely you’ve heard at least a few of those! Here are another few of my own favorites:
- “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing
and rightdoing there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.” - “Stop acting so small. You are the universe in ecstatic motion.”
Because I’d like to focus on the affirmations I’ve written inspired by Rumi’s poetry, I won’t spend too much more time with quotes, but even from these, you can see his profound and deep truth that he shared with the world, even in simple, quotable lines.
