52 Affirmations for Personal Sovereignty Against Oppression

I recently wrote an article about what it means to be personally sovereign in spirituality, essentially that our own sovereignty is tied to the liberation of everyone else who has been oppressed.

These ideas are not mine, and they are not new. Audre Lorde said,

“I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own.”

People, specifically Black women and POC, have been writing about this for a very long time. That our own personal sovereignty means freeing others.

I wanted to write some affirmations for personal sovereignty that will help you connect on a soul level to the idea that we are all interconnected, and your own personal liberation is a stepping stone to the liberation of others.

What Does It Mean to Be Personally Sovereign?

Personal sovereignty is the universal right to determine one’s own beliefs, values, and life path—free from external influence like colonialism, corporations, or rigid social norms. It’s often misused to justify selfish or harmful behavior under the guise of “sovereignty.”

Real sovereignty encompasses the knowledge of the suffering and necessary liberation of others around us. In other words, true sovereignty includes empathy and respect for others. Recognizing your own autonomy naturally fosters respect for others’ autonomy and encourages creating an inclusive society for everyone.

We must oppose forces that suppress personal sovereignty—including systemic and oppressive structures like white supremacy, racism, white feminism, colonialism, imperialism, fascism, and capitalism.
