What is Non-Attachment?

Non-attachment is the idea of detaching oneself from one’s desires, wants, and outcomes. It’s allowing the universe to guide us on our path instead of trying to control everything ourselves.

We don’t have to own anything.
We don’t have to control anything.
We don’t have to possess anything.
We don’t have to fix anything.

We ARE everything.

Non-attachment is a concept that originates from Buddhism. In essence, this is the concept of “inter-being,” introduced by Thich Nhat Hanh in the tradition of Engaged Buddhism–I inter-am with the trees, the grass, my pets, my family, my ancestors. We are not at all separate, and in fact, we are all one.

Therefore, when you understand that you are one with the Universe, you can release all attachment to something, to a desire, to an outcome, to a plan, and accept whatever the Universe gives you as divine source. Everything comes from the Universe and returns to the Universe. Nothing is separate.

Being Consciousness

Michael Beckwith describes non-attachment as being integral to the fourth and final stage of Life Visioning, Being Consciousness. The four stages are:

  1. Victim consciousness
  2. Manifestor consciousness
  3. Channeling consciousness
  4. Being consciousness

In Being Consciousness, you not only manifest your ideas, channel the Universe through you, but you also understand that you in fact ARE the Universe. You are not separate from the Universe, and whenever you speak, the Universe is speaking through you. When you create and share with the world, the Universe is sharing through you.
