How to Start a Healthy Morning Routine

Most people would agree that they want to start their day healthy and productive. But the first few hours of our morning are often the most difficult time to motivate ourselves. From getting up, to eating breakfast, to getting out the door on time for work or school- these all seem like daunting tasks in the morning when we’re tired and not feeling well rested.

We can’t always control what happens to us during the day, but we can start it off right. Starting your day with a healthy routine will help you take care of your body and mind, which can then lead you to feel more confident in whatever is going on around you. You’ll also fight the temptation of being drawn into negative thoughts or distractions because you’ll have established time for yourself before getting active for the day.

You don’t need to make a huge overhaul to start your day with healthy habits and routine. In fact, healthy habits should be easy to add into your mornings.

It’s important that you set healthy routines for yourself, but also make sure they’re realistic and attainable. If you try to start a healthy routine that is too hard or not doable, it will only lead to frustration and loss of motivation; something healthy living does not benefit from at all.

It’s important to note that healthy habits need consistency; they are not overnight changes and you should be consistent with healthy habits to benefit in the long run.

10 Habits for an Energizing, Healthy Morning Routine

1) Get to sleep early the night before.

When you want a healthy morning routine, try getting to sleep early the night before

Your healthy morning routine won’t be healthy if you don’t have enough sleep at night. This will not only affect your health negatively in general, but also your healthy habits you work hard on during a healthy morning routine. Adequate sleep is healthy even long-term as it will prevent health problems in the future.

Getting enough sleep has many benefits, including helping us be more focused while we’re awake. Sleep also helps our skin look healthy and will help us feel less hungry. Getting enough sleep can also help reduce stress levels, which in turn will enable you to focus properly and do your best work

This usually means aiming to be in bed 8-9 hours before. When you know you have to get up at 7:00 in the morning, this means being in bed by 10:00 or 11:00 at night. Make sure you stop eating and drinking by about 8:00pm to make sure you stay asleep the full night. Don’t forget to turn off the TV by about 8:00pm too!

Affirmations can help you stay focused, too!

2) Wake up earlier in the morning too

If you want to start your mornings off in a healthy way, then waking up earlier is the best option. Your body naturally starts producing a mild amount of cortisol and adrenaline which can help get you going for the day ahead.

Waking up early give you plenty of time and ensures that you aren’t starting your day frantically, which can get your day off to a relaxing start. When you’re frantic, your body produces more cortisol than you need, and you’re more likely to feel tired, crave sugary foods, and feel unsettled the rest of the day.

Plus, if you wake up a little earlier than usual, you may have time for some moderate exercise like yoga (see below), and then you can pack a healthy lunch instead of planning to eat out!

3) Get rid of distractions.

Start off the day with mindfulness and living in the moment. This means going without checking emails, social networks etc. When we do this the first thing in the morning, it’s not only unproductive, but it can also harm our energy levels and productivity throughout the day.

  • Set a time to check emails, social networks etc.
  • If you can’t set a specific time for this, at least make sure it’s not right after waking up or before going to sleep.

You don’t need distractions when you are trying to start your day healthy!

4) Drink water first thing when you wake up.

There are many benefits to drinking water when you first wake up. First, water actually energizes us. When we are dehydrated, we can get tired and fatigued easily. Water on an empty stomach in the morning also can help give our metabolism a little boost.

Try to drink 8-16 ounces when you first wake up.

Want to supercharge your water? Add some apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar has been proven to help weight loss, regulate blood sugar and heal leaky gut. It even has been proven to fight cancer cells! Add about a tablespoon ACV to your water first thing in the morning.

5) Stretch or do yoga.

Yoga and stretching can add to a healthy morning routine

The benefits of stretching in the morning are many. It helps to keep your metabolism high and can help you to see better. Stretching and yoga can help our blood flow, which brings oxygen around to our bodies, preparing our muscles and organs (brain included!) to do their jobs well during the day.

Stretching in the morning can also help with joint stiffness, tendonitis, frozen joints, respiratory problems, and can reduce muscle soreness. It’s also beneficial for stress relief.

By stretching before working out you are preparing your body so it doesn’t hurt too badly when you start exercising. Stretching is a great way to get ready for the day ahead as well as helping you to recover from the day before. It’s important that it be done at least twice a day: once when you first wake up and again when you go workout.

6) Work out!

Get rid of stress, feel healthy, and feel energized for the day by working out in the morning. Exercising gets our blood moving, which, as stated before, moves oxygen and nutrients around our bodies to keep us at peak health. It can also be beneficial because we are less likely to think about eating unhealthy foods after a workout.

There are many ways to get fit, such as yoga, walking, running, swimming etc. You can even check out 10 minute workout videos on YouTube. Find what works best for you and practice healthy habits by doing that every day.

7) Eat a healthy breakfast.

Eating healthy in the morning can help you go throughout your day without feeling hungry and grumpy all day long. It will also give you much needed energy!

Don’t try skipping it completely, because then you might feel deprived and eat an unhealthy snack later in the day. Eating a healthy breakfast to nourish your body will make you feel fuller and more energetic than consuming a healthy meal later on in the day.

Some healthy breakfast options might include: a smoothie (blended fruits and vegetables) with or without protein, eggs and a breakfast salad, plain Greek yogurt with fruit or granola, or an open-face sandwich or melt. Try to make sure you get your protein!

8) Take care of your appearance and hygiene

This one should be self-explanatory, but make sure you take care of your hygiene in the morning. Self-care is essential. After you’ve had a good work out, you’ll want to get clean. Believe it or not, looking good and feeling your best help you get into a positive, healthy mindset that can set up a good, healthy routine.

Dressing nicely and wearing clean, well-tailored clothes make you feel different about yourself—they can drastically alter your posture. Even feeling confident and good about yourself can have a direct impact on your healthy choices during the rest of the day.

9) Make a plan for the day.

Make a plan for your day

Sticking to healthy habits is much easier when you have your schedule ready every day. Take some time in the morning to plan out what you want to be doing and not only this, but make sure you plan your meals for the rest of the day! Pack a healthy lunch, and make sure you know what your plans are for a healthy dinner.

However, make sure you don’t feel guilty or angry when things don’t go according to plan. Being flexible is a part of a healthy mindset and can prevent you from stress eating or coping in unhealthy ways.

10) Recite some affirmations or do power poses.

Affirmations are a part of a healthy mindset. Affirmations are true, powerful, positive sentences that help you focus on what you want in life.

Sometime in the morning – maybe as you shower or on your drive to work – say some affirmations to yourself. These can be things like “Every day I am getting better” or “I am healthy and strong.” Say these affirmations over and over again to yourself with confidence.

Power poses work similarly, to instill confidence and help us feel ready to take on your day with grace. Check out this TedTalk for more information on power poses.
