How is Health Related to Success?

When we examine how good health and success are related, you’ll find that there are many connections. All of the following factors contribute to a person’s success:

– mental clarity (alertness, focus)
– energy levels
– stress level management (cortisol levels)

For example, if someone is in good physical shape but their productivity is low because they are stressed, the success and health connection is clear.

So how does a healthy lifestyle contribute to success?

Leading a healthy lifestyle not only improves one’s success by increasing their productivity but also reduces stress levels which has been linked to lower life satisfaction. Lower cortisol levels have also been correlated with increased performance in certain areas of life.

The success and health connection doesn’t stop there. Healthy behaviors, such as eating healthy foods or exercising can also improve success in other areas of life! This is because a healthy lifestyle helps to promote a positive self-esteem which has been linked to success. Also, leading a healthy lifestyle boosts one’s energy levels so it will be easier for them to stay on task and be productive.

Let’s examine 6 different aspects of health and how they can be a boost or detriment to our success.

6 Ways a Healthy Lifestyle Can Boost Your Success

1) Not getting the right nutrition can lead to a host of mental health problems, which can be a detriment to your success

Eating food with high nutritional value is one way to take advantage of the success and health connection

For example, according to Joyce Cavaye at The Conversation, she draws a line between poor nutrition (think lots of junk foods or take out that are devoid of essential nutrients) and mental health issues like ADHD and Alzheimer’s.

Nutrition and success are deeply connected. Without proper nutrition, your mental health can be severely affected, and without proper mental health you may not succeed in the workplace.

Nutrition is a key component of success for many reasons: poor nutrition leads to physical problems that affect an individual’s ability to work; it also impacts their mood which can lead to depression or anxiety. Poor nutrition affects sleep patterns as well.

Contrastingly, getting proper nutrition can vastly improve your life and success. Healthy eating may improve your mental health, which in turn can help you achieve success. If you’re feeling anxious or depressed and are having trouble concentrating, getting the right nutrition can make all the difference for how successful and happy you feel during a workday.

There’s also evidence that suggests that healthy eating improves sleep patterns as well!

Actionable Tips:

In order to take full advantage of the connection between nutrition and success, take full advantage of nutrition for your success, making a few simple changes can really help.

– Focus on foods that come right from the ground: fruits, veggies, mushrooms, and nuts. Make sure you eat all different colors!
– Opt for lean protein, which helps us stay fuller longer and helps us build muscle.
– Include healthy fats like olive oil or avocado.
– Watch out for low-nutritional foods that are packed with sugar and salt.

2) Stress literally kills brain cells. Lower cortisol levels are associated with increased performance.

Self-care is a healthy part of any daily routine and combats stress.

Think you’ll be at peak functioning levels if you’re chronically stressed? No, me neither.

Stress actually kills brain cells. You can be left tired, low-energy, foggy-brained, and have trouble making connections. Those of us who suffer from chronic stress know how difficult it is to reach our goals and make achievements in life.

But, lower cortisol levels are associated with increased performance. Stress and success is a two-way street, but it’s not always an easy one to traverse. It can be difficult for some people to manage stress in their lives.

However, low levels of stress help to motivate us and keep us energized to work toward our goals. So don’t get rid of all your stress!

Actionable Tips:

If you want good health and success, make sure you have a healthy self-care routine. In our world of 24/7 work and side hustles, we think we need to push ourselves to be of any value.

Get rid of those unhealthy mindsets and develop a more balanced approach to stress and self-care.

Spend at least 10 minutes a day for yourself, and 1-2 hours (all at once) once a week to yourself to do something that can help you get rid of stress.

Here are some additional benefits of self-care.

3) A balanced gut flora is essential for a healthy central nervous system

Pickled vegetables are a good source of probiotics, which are essential for a healthy gut and healthy mind

Your central nervous system is comprised of your brain, spine, and nerves, which send impulses from your brain to your body. These impulses tell you what to do.

But your nervous system can’t function at peak performance when your gut is unhealthy. There is a greater mass of research on the connection between your gut and your brain and nerves.

A good gut flora provides your body with the necessary good bacteria, which can be depleted by an unhealthy lifestyle. The good bacteria in a healthy gut are responsible for producing neurotransmitters and regulating moods and sleep patterns. Neurotransmitter is another word for brain chemicals that allow good feelings to happen naturally, without feeling like you’re on drugs.

A good gut flora can even help regulate your immune response, which is a system that fights off infections in the body. A good immune system means fewer sick days and more productivity for you!

Research even shows the bacteria in your gut are responsible for producing most of the serotonin–a chemical produced by our bodies that regulates mood.

Your gut is a good indicator of how good you feel, both physically and mentally. When it comes to good health and success, the gut goes all the way!

Actionable Tips:

For good health and success, make sure you’re not neglecting your gut health. Eat foods that have naturally occurring probiotics, like yogurt, kefir, pickles, or sauerkraut.

You can also take a probiotic supplement every day (it doesn’t have to be the first thing in the morning).

4) Healthy lifestyle choices like fitness boost energy levels

Regular fitness can contribute to a healthy lifestyle, which is related to life success

Engaging in regular fitness can absolutely help our success and achievement increase because it gives our bodies the energy we need to tackle any task or project. When you are good with your health, it can be very easy to stay productive in every other area of life as well!

Fitness isn’t just good for your body, it’s good for your brain! They say that a 20 minute walk can give a boost of energy equivalent to drinking a cup of coffee! I don’t know if that’s accurate, but fitness can definitely increase your alertness. If you have a particularly mentally challenging or grueling task ahead, be sure to do some light exercise to prime your brain!

When you’re at your prime fitness level, your stamina increases as well. You’ll have the endurance to plow through a good day of work or study and still be able to go out on an evening run!

Actionable Tips:

Find exercise that you like to do. If you don’t like running, then try an at-home workout with a YouTube fitness instructor. If you like a mental challenge, try rock climbing routes.

Get into a routine and stick to it! Consistency is important because it helps your body and mind get used to the activity.

5) Getting enough sleep is essential for good health and success.

Sleeping enough leads to good health and success

Sleep is absolutely essential for boosting your success and life satisfaction. Here are some ways that getting good sleep improves good health and success:

  • Sleep can make you healthier by lowering blood pressure in people who have hypertension. This will mean good health for you and less chance of a stroke.
  • Sleep promotes good physical activity like your ability to walk long distances, climb stairs, move quickly or perform stretching exercises.
  • Getting enough sleep can also help with weight loss by lowering appetite and the need for snacking throughout the day while awake. It’s been shown that people who sleep more have lower BMIs.
  • Sleep also helps your brain work better and be healthier by helping increase the production of good chemicals that help regulate moods, concentration levels and awareness.
  • Getting enough good sleep can lead to less stress on a daily basis which means fewer headaches, easier breathing, reduced blood pressure or improved heart health.
  • It has also been shown that good sleep can help to lessen anxiety in people with Generalized Anxiety Disorder or panic attacks.

The connections between good health and success are clear when you know how important it is for your physical wellbeing to get enough good quality sleep. Sleep’s benefits make life much better, more enjoyable and more successful.

Actionable Tips:

Get to bed early (but not too early). Do some light exercise before bed and take a magnesium, which helps your body regulate its own sleep hormones.

Use an alarm clock with light or wake up with the natural light of the sun (if you can). These help our circadian rhythms stay regular.

If you wake up in the middle of the night, don’t turn on your phone! The blue light can activate our brains to think it’s daytime! Instead, light a candle and read a book until you feel yourself start to get sleepy again.

And avoid late-night snacking!

6) A healthy lifestyle boosts self-esteem, which is associated with higher achievement and success

A Healthy Lifestyle can boost our self-esteem

Something as simple as self-esteem can have a huge impact on our success and life satisfaction. A healthy lifestyle naturally increases our self-esteem and when we feel good about ourselves, our work is more productive and successful.

A healthy lifestyle also boosts self-esteem because it allows us to take care of ourselves. When you are good with yourself, the world starts looking better too!

People who have higher self-esteem tend to outperform those who don’t. In one study, a group of students was given good self-esteem, while another had its self esteem diminished. The good news is that not only did the participants with good self esteem outperform those who didn’t have it; but they actually achieved more in less time.

When we feel good about ourselves, our confidence and motivation levels are much higher, and we are more likely to be successful. Try getting some affirmation cards to boost your mindset.

The good news is that self-esteem can also be increased through good health habits such as exercise, eating healthy foods and getting enough sleep. It’s not just about being good with ourselves; it’s the way of life that helps us get there!

Actionable Tips:

If you want to start to boost your self-esteem, it will naturally increase as you start to do all of the other 5 things on this list: eating healthy, balancing your gut flora, exercising regularly, and getting good sleep.
